I Live in the Center of the Universe: Xbox 360 VS PS3

I’ll finally admit it, I like the Xbox better than the PS3. I like the Achievement VS Trophy system and that you can see/compare that information more readily than on the PS3. I love me some statistics.

I feel nearly the exact same way. If you click through, you notice she wished she got Portal 2 for the Xbox rather than PS3. I contemplated the same - so I could play on my console, but also have a copy for my Mac. But then I realized I really hate playing games on the PS3, I enjoy the Xbox so much more, and I don’t even know how ofter I would even play on my computer if I could.

I am amazed at just how well done the Xbox is for a Microsoft product. And for Sony, who is mostly dedicated to home entertainment (versus Microsoft that offers such a range of products), how terrible the PS3 is to use. Some examples

  • A system update every other day it feels like. Every time I boot my PS3, I have to update.
  • The recent personal data leak, and their complete response to the situation
  • The sheer complexity to get around on the device. Once you get past the first later of the root level of the interface, it is insane to navigate
  • Buying something from the store is so confusing. Is it downloading, or not? What can I do while it downloads? Oh wait, and then I have to install the download?
  • Continuously removing features for no real customer facing reason (IE removing stuff like SD card ports, Linux support, etc)
  • Trophies feel weird. I understand the Xbox’s achievements. I like to get them, and like to build my gamerscore, but I also like just playing the game. On the PS3, I don’t even really know what I am doing other than playing the game.

We got our PS3 for free when we bought a new TV a couple of years ago. I wanted to buy one at the time - and I am VERY glad I never really spent money on this. The only games we play on it are those tied to the system - for example LittleBigPlanet (1 and 2) and Metal Gear Solid 4. Any game that is made available on other systems has always been purchased for the Xbox versus the PS3.

To me, the PS3 feels like a device made by engineers with too many committees, mostly made of engineers. The Xbox feels like a device made by people (developers, marketing, execs, and users) who want to enjoy themselves while playing a game, watching a movie, or connection with people through their network.
